Comonwealth Games will be `spectacular'

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday said the mechanisms put in place by the government for hosting the Commonwealth Games in the Capital next year will make the games a "spectacular show".

"There were some problems in the smooth functioning. A delay was there in some projects, but I am confident that the mechanisms now put in place by the government will ensure that the games are conducted in a proper manner," Singh told reporters.

"I am hopeful that the games will be organised in a splendid manner and the spectators are going to see spectacular games," said the Prime Minister.

Commonwealth Games are scheduled to be held in New Delhi between October 3-14 next year.

The Prime Minister had to intervene in the matter, when the Commonwealth Games Federation chief Michael Fennell had written to him in September, expressing dissatisfaction at the preparations for the games. Singh had directed the Union Sports Minister M.S. Gill to monitor the preparations, though the games organising committee had heaved a sigh of relief earlier this month, when an independent panel reviewed the preparations and expressed satisfaction at the ongoing work.

Singh, however, parried a question on demands from a section of Congress leaders that party general secretary Rahul Gandhi be given the responsibility of Commonwealth Games, like his late father Rajiv Gandhi was given charge of 1982 Asian games.
